Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)
Approved training centres in Sligo & Donegal
Professional Driver Training have 3 RSA approved training centres in Sligo & Donegal to deliver CPC (certificate of professional competence) training to either new drivers or existing drivers.
Driver CPC came into effect for bus and minibus drivers on the 10th September 2008 and for truck drivers on the 10th of September 2009. This affects both new and existing drivers.
Existing Bus/Minibus Drivers
For existing drivers who have held a bus or minibus licence before the 10th September 2008 you will have acquired rights and you will automatically get your CPC Licence without having to take a test.
In order to keep your CPC current you will have to complete 35 hours of training over the next 5 years which amounts to 7 hours per year (1 day per year). This is just training and does not involve any exams.
Existing Truck Drivers
For existing drivers who currently hold a full truck licence before the 10th September 2009 you will have acquired rights and you will automatically get your CPC Licence without having to take a test.
In order to keep your CPC current you will have to complete 35 hours of training over the next 5 years which amounts to 7 hours per year (1 day per year). This is just training and does not involve any exams.
Becoming a Professional Truck Driver
For anyone thinking about becoming a professional truck driver, now would be a good time to obtain a Driver CPC Licence.
New Bus/Minibus Drivers
For new drivers wishing to become bus or minibus drivers since the 10th September 2008 you will have to do the CPC Examination in addition to the current driving test.
This is made up of:
- Bus theory test (current theory test)
- CPC theory tests (multiple choice+case studies)
- On road driving test (current bus/ minibus driving test)
- CPC practical test (usually done after the driving test)
After completing all of the above new drivers will be subject to 35 hours of periodic training the same as the existing drivers which amounts to 7 hours per year with no exams just training.
New Truck Drivers
For all new drivers wishing to become professional truck drivers after the 10th September 2009 you will have to do the CPC Examination in addition to the current driving test. This is made up of:
- Truck theory test (current theory test)
- CPC theory tests (multiple choice+case studies)
- On road driving test (current truck driving test)
- CPC practical test (usually done after the driving test)
After completing all of the above new drivers will be subject to 35 hours of periodic training the same as the existing drivers which amounts to 7 hours per year with no exams just training.
